5 Reasons Why You Need To Start Moisturising Your Body

5 Reasons Why You Should Start Moisturising Your Body Featured

As the title says, I’ll be talking about the 5 important reasons of moisturising not just your face, but also your body.

I’m a lazy one and don’t do this as often as I should but I’m taking it one step at a time to make this a routine.

If you’re like me, we’ll just start taking small steps together!

Oh and before we begin, do you know about this Korean Variety Show called ‘Knowing Brothers’?

Also called 아는 형님 (ah-neun hyeongnim). If you’re not into the Korean stuff, you can just skip this part but if you do, YAY! That show is so damn hilarious lol.

I actually got the inspiration to write this post from Kim Heechul (the one with platinum/blonde hair). He was always moisturising his hands before the shoot starts and his hands look so damn young for a 34-year-old (as of posting).

Okay enough of this, let’s get to the point!

5 Reasons Why You Need To Start Moisturising Your Body

1. It Prevents Aging (which we already should know) and Helps Skin Stay Younger for longer

Our skin is the largest organ and the one that deals with any oncoming damage first. If the barrier isn’t resilient, we could be more susceptible to injuries. To make sure the skin feels supple and well moisturised, a moisturising layer is needed to maintain the barrier function as well as repair any damages done to the skin.

Moisturising regularly helps to strengthen and nourish your skin, which also slows the sign of aging!

We always say that the neck shows the first signs of aging, so we may apply moisturiser religiously on our face and neck.

However, neglecting your body and caring only for your face will make the rest of your skin lose elasticity and become drier.

By making sure that the outermost layers of the skin are maintaining consistent moisture levels, do you know that you are also widening the gap to getting wrinkles and inelastic skin? Yay to aging slower (on the outside)!

If you are also constantly out in the sun everyday, you are more in need of moisture as well as sun protection (do wear sunblock!).

2. You Exfoliate, Wax or Shave some parts of your body

We all might have heard that our skin naturally sheds dead skin cells every 28-40 days. As we grow older, the natural process of dead skin cell shedding slows down.

On top of that, if you exfoliate your body and wax your legs (for example), you do need that extra moisture so that the barrier of your skin can better protect your skin. Moisturising after exfoliation or wax can help to soothe the irritation from those activities and help your skin heal quicker.

BUT try to keep your body lotion away from open wounds as the chemicals from the lotion might enter your bloodstream and cause further irritation.

Use a separate medicated cream or a plaster for your wound instead.

P.S. I have also used a few drops of KraveBeauty’s Kale-lalu-yAHA into my body moisturiser to incorporate some gentle exfoliation. Do also apply a body moisturiser with SPF in the day!

I added some reviews of the products I have tried and tested. Will add more links here when I have reviewed more! 🙂

3. You Drink a lot of Alcoholic, Caffeinated drinks or Exercise Regularly

Grouping these three together because all of them cause you to lose hydration. Now, do not confuse hydration with moisture.

Treat hydration as: The alcohol-free toner you use at the start of your skincare routine.

Treat moisture as: The moisturiser you use after your whole skincare routine.

However, just using one or the other doesn’t necessarily help in the improvement of your skin barrier.

Using your hydrating toner, but not sealing it with a moisturiser, does not retain the hydration for a long time.

Similarly, moisturising on top of dry skin can still make your skin flake and feel rough as it only protects the outer layer of your skin for a while.

(Think of it as applying moisturising lipstick on top of really chapped lips. It doesn’t go on smoothly, does it?)

After consuming alcoholic or caffeinated (a lot of coffee or tea) drinks as well as exercising, make sure to replenish your body with water as these cause dehydration.

Once the hydrating step is done and you moisturise your body, the combine effects can be efficiently seen.

Even if you don’t drink these or exercise much, drinking enough water is always a major benefit for your skin.

4. You work with Detergents or use Hand Soaps a lot in a day

This can probably be the case for many occupations or even for mothers.

Especially if you’re making sure that your hands are free of germs to handle your child’s food or toys, or even using hand sanitisers frequently when you’re outside.

They usually contain alcohol or oil-stripping agents. Using it will cause your hands to lose the moisture it needs, that’s why we always feel squeaky clean or dry and tight after washing our hands.

Not all soaps are moisturising or gentle enough. Same goes for the shower foam or body wash you use when you shower! Some of them strip away your skin’s natural oils.

A hand cream can save the day while you’re out, but why not apply it to your elbows and knees too?

I like bringing a hand cream out as I always encounter situations when my hands feels so dry and tight after using the soap in the washroom. Urgh, it really becomes a lifesaver.

5. You wear Lip Products on a Regular Basis

Sometimes, I forget to give my lips some TLC. I only regret it the next day when they become all chapped and just a really bad base for my lipsticks.

I don’t have a habit of using a lip balm every night, but I try to use it the night before that I know I will be going out with a lipstick.

A quick tip though, if you do need some instant moisture for your lips, you can use a thick enough layer of your moisturiser on your lips, continue with your makeup routine and then remove it right when you are left with the lipstick step!

There will usually be some dead skin cells wanting to come off, so take it off before your lipstick application and you should be okay.

And that’s it.

I hope these reasons are enough to know how important moisturising is!

If you have any other reasons or tips, do leave it down in the comments! We all learn something new everyday.
