Yay I’ve got a perm for the first time!
To be honest, I was a bit nervous before coming since it was my first time perming my hair.
What if it doesn’t turn out well? What if my hair is FRIED?
Are the people nice?
Let me quench your thirst right in this very post.
(Btw, I had to redo my perm so I went back a second time. Hence the different clothes, if you noticed)
I’ll let you know the reason why as I go along!
Also, I didn’t expect to type so much for this post but I realised I had a lot to share!
A blog post on whether a hair salon is good, would be better detailed than short, right?
How I came to know about The Day’s Hair
I have always wanted to get my hair permed but I didn’t want to do it in Singapore.
It was expensive over here and the salons don’t look very welcoming.
I googled to see what good hair salons there were and I came across many reviews, on Youtube and on the web!
JUNO Hair, Lumio, etc. Then I heard about The Day’s Hair and checked out their website – which had a price list too. (score)
If you cannot read Korean, you can ask in the DM how much does the procedure cost.
The designer I was looking to get my hair done for me was Dean (딘)!
I wanted to make an informed decision before heading over to Korea so I started DM-ing Dean.
I asked a lot of questions lol
Whether a perm includes treatment and cut (nope, it excludes treatment), whether it’ll take a long time, and how much it’d cost exactly for my length of hair.
But Dean gladly answered everything which eased my fears.
So I made an appointment via DM on instagram.
Dean’s Instagram – instagram.com/thedays_dean
On his instagram page, he mentioned this:
인스타 예약 모든시술 30%할인 (which roughly translates to ‘when you make a reservation via Instagram, you get 30% off all procedures’)
Not sure whether this promotion will go on forever, but make sure to ask if you wish to make an appointment via Instagram DM!
Disclaimer: I was given a little more discount in exchange for a blog post BUT I was already planning on blogging about my experience whether or not it was given. All thoughts are mine and not sugarcoated in any way. I went here twice and I noticed how other customers were treated too and I don’t think I was a special treatment just because I was going to blog about it.
There are others who work in The Day’s Hair but I chose Dean because of the beautiful perms and cuts (for both men and women) in his Instagram gallery.
Anyway, fast forward to me reaching The Day’s Hair!
Korean Hair Salon Experience – The Day’s Hair
When I came in, Dean was finishing up on someone else’s hair and so another person attended to me.
If I’m not wrong, her name was Seung Eun (승은)! She greeted me and proceeded to ask if I made a reservation (예약 – yeah-yak) and I told her the timing along with my name.
Bear in mind that I spoke to them in Korean 90% of the time I was there but I’m sure if you said it in English, they would try to understand it too.
Dean can speak English too, I saw him attending to a lady who could only speak English and I could see that they were able to get messages across, although not smoothly, but enough.
Seung Eun sat my boyfriend and I down and even got us to choose drinks. (The menu given to me was in Korean, not sure if they have one in English)
Got some iced tea and biscuits while waiting.
Comparing it with general Singapore hair salons, this one looked much brighter and welcoming. Pastel colours are my weakness lol.
Before coming here, I’ve cut and dyed my hair twice in Singapore salons. The salons in Singapore looked very boring and cold – white, black, silver or wooden colours.
And I didn’t really like the experience in each of the times I went. (Both were different salons)
Maybe I was just superbly unlucky.
What I didn’t like about Singapore Salons:
- Rough with shampooing and washing
- Not very polite and meticulous
- Very cold (not literally)
- Everyone does their own job and attends to their assigned customers
- Doesn’t look like a warm environment
I won’t talk about what I like about them because I don’t lol.
As for The Day’s Hair, (I’m really not paid to say this) it is TOTALLY opposite. I felt like I was in a new world.
The salon wasn’t a very big place but it was a comfortable size to not feel so scary? Guys, I’m running out of words, bear with me lol.
Whenever a customer leaves or steps in, they greet hello and thank you without fail, while also trying to give eye contact to the person.
I can’t even count the number of times they greeted everyone with a smile. Respect.
When Dean was done, he came over to assess my hair stating that I apparently have a natural frizzy type of hair strand, so even when my perm does come out nice, it’ll still look slightly frizzy because of how my hair strands are.
But I still wanted to do it because I trusted him. You’ll see the end result below!
So we did and started with treatment. This was the area where I got my hair washed and my treatment done, Seung Eun was really gentle with washing and also nice to talk to!
She chatted with me and asked me questions about Singapore and what kind of hairstyles are popular and trendy over there.
And many more!
Usually, I’d find small talks to be a bit burdensome because I personally don’t like small talks when I know a person doesn’t genuinely want to know.
However, Seung Eun’s reactions to my answers were really cute and it honestly made me feel HAPPY (for once) to make small talks.
I’m a little soft-spoken in real life too.
Dean was also nice to talk to as well! It was quite fun to practice my Korean and when I couldn’t answer them fully, I’d change it to English HAHA.
When we asked each other who were our favourite singer, he humorously said “Dean” LOL and I asked if that was why he chose Dean as his English name haha.
But yeah, obviously that wasn’t the reason why haha.
I thought he would be a little cold before I came, but when he starts talking, he sounded like a friend.
Honestly, this was the most comfortable experience I’ve had so far at a hair salon.
Anyway…
After treatment, it was time to get things rolling (literally).
I asked for a layered perm (because I have really thick hair, really thick) and Dean gave me a layered cut.
He also did Magic perm at the top part of my hair to straighten it.
Then it was time for the perm!
Haha seriously, this was the funny part.
I had so much hair that they ran out of rollers to use. I felt so bad for having thick hair at that moment.
Say hi to Seung Eun and Dean. Haha, yeah pretend that it’s me holding an ice cream LOL.
Even then, they didn’t even complain or get annoyed. I could see Dean was really contemplating on what he could do so my perm would be done well.
After almost 4 hours of dealing with my hair and looking like Marilyn Monroe for a while, I was done!
Dean told me that he didn’t go too strong for the perm because it was my first time doing one. I suppose it was to make sure my hair doesn’t get too damaged or that he also said my hair seems like it would hold curls well.
If it doesn’t turn out well after a week, Dean told me to come back and get it done again.
And sadly, because my hair is really thick, the curls under got loose pretty quick. Headed back a week after, and Dean did it for me again!
This time it took 2.5 hours because we didn’t have to go through cut or treatment again.
Thank you to Ri Ahn and Ji Seon who helped me out on that day too! (No pictures of them, sorry!)
Everyone working there looked so pretty and handsome, I felt like a potato lol.
And this is how the second time turned out! Dean kept saying that it came out really beautifully haha and I agree. He said that the first time too, but this time it was much more beautiful than we expected.
You could see that it was more curly. Lol, I felt like a goddess. (Previously, I felt like a princess – yup, please excuse me)
It’s been roughly 3 weeks since I redid it and the curls are still looking pretty. I try to wash my hair every 3 days only though, as the more you wash, the faster the curl goes away.
It hasn’t been that long since they opened earlier this year but if you’re in the Hongdae area, do try them out!
More info is down below!
강추!!! (Kang Chu – Strongly Recommend!!!)
Some random but important info:
- Dean is only one year older than me but he’s been in this job for 5 years! Crazy talented.
- Try to go as early in your trip as possible just in case you need to go back to do it again (which shouldn’t be common).
- The curls will turn out more defined after the first wash than what you see above.
- The perm can last up to 6 months, but not for sure (depending on how you take care of it)
- You can only wash your hair after at least 2 days – did this in Summer and omg it’s so hot. Try to do this in other seasons haha
- Dean will tell you how to blow dry your perm for better results.
- Do make reservations way ahead just in case! I think I made mine almost a month before?
- Dean also gave me a mini tub of L’oreal hair mask to strengthen my hair.
- You will need to get a curling cream to use right before you blow dry your hair to maintain the curls.
- Price will be different for everyone as it depends on what you need and the length of your hair.
- They have portable chargers for you to charge your phone in case you need it.
- The toilet is SUPER nice.
And that’s all I have to say today! Say hi for me if you ever get to go there haha!
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask me or even Dean directly.
Thank you once again to the people at The Day’s Hair and thank you Dean for taking the pictures for me haha.
Btw, Dean is off on Wednesdays!
