My Cat Shelter Cafe Experience in Japan

My Cat Shelter Cafe Experience in Japan Featured

Anyone who knows me in real life, knows that I really love cats and want one in the future.

If there was a reason (not that you needed one) that I could go to a Cat Cafe / shelter for cats, I’m all for it.

However, there was a legit reason this time.

The period that we were going to Japan was also the period when Airbnb started having new regulations for Japan homes.

They needed to have licenses in order to operate under Airbnb and this… led to our accommodation being cancelled twice.

The second cancellation was even barely one week before leaving for Japan.

Imagine the horror we experienced knowing that we had to find a suitable accommodation at a good place in Osaka before anyone else snaps it up due to the same reason we got cancelled.

Fast forward to 2 cancellations later…

And we successfully found a licensed Airbnb Host.

Accommodations down.

We were going to be living right smack in Tsuruhashi, a place like Koreatown.

They were selling Korean food everywhere, I kid you not. Kimchi, seafood pancakes, kimchi stew, kimbab…

All that you can think of, was being sold in our area.

(Doesn’t help that I was craving Korean food – but didn’t get it because I was heading to Korea soon anyway)

The prices were sort of expensive too (and that deterred us from getting it).

Anyway, this isn’t the main thing about this post. Haha let me get on with it.

If you haven’t gotten cancelled by an unexpected circumstance in Airbnb before, then I’ll be glad to let you know that they would refund you 100% of the amount you paid to Airbnb and usually a little more money in the voucher in return for the inconvenience you experienced.

Not sure if this is new, but it hasn’t been that long since the Activities part of Airbnb started so they also gave us $100 worth of Airbnb Activities!

We got down to see what activities we can use on in Osaka and found this particular ‘Experience’ in Osaka, Juso.

Read more about it in the link above! It’s also called Nekono-Ki – http://nekono-ki.com/

Cat Shelter Airbnb ExperienceIt costs us S$31 each, but because we had the $100 voucher, we used it and didn’t pay a cent.

The other experiences were a little too expensive too.

Not sponsored or anything btw. I went for the experience and also because it was free and for a good cause haha.

It wasn’t exactly just a cat cafe.

It was like a cat shelter cafe.

Dai (the host), has over 40 cats living here (including kittens). He nurses them back to health so that they can be adopted again.

They all have a different past and Dai takes them in.

But because he has so many cats, he doesn’t have the time to play with them.

Hence, this experience came in!

You may adopt them but I’m not sure how it works if you don’t live in Japan.

My Cat Shelter Cafe Experience in JapanThe timing I chose via Airbnb was 12pm-2pm.

He provides you slippers and a drink. But do remember to bring your own socks! You’ll be wearing it with a pair of rubber slippers which were quite hard to walk in haha.

I got an Ice Chocolate (which was really nice), not sure why I didn’t take a picture of it.My Cat Shelter Cafe Experience in Japan Adoption

Cats for adoption!

My Cat Shelter Cafe Experience in JapanDai chatted with us for a bit while making our drinks. He can speak a little bit of English, while we can speak basic Japanese, so we didn’t have a problem communicating simple things.

My Cat Shelter Cafe Experience in JapanSome instructions to follow! Some cats cannot be fed because they are diabetic or have epilepsy.

Dai gave us some treats to feed the rest when we went in.

My Cat Shelter Cafe Experience in Japan First FloorThere were two floors and this was the first one! When you come in, there’d be kittens on the right, mostly caged because there are other older cats around.

Then there are cats wearing clothes (such as the red one lying on the ground), these are the cats you shouldn’t feed.

When we arrived, they were mostly sleeping but the cats upstairs were having their own fun!

My Cat Shelter Cafe Experience in Japan Second FloorThey look a little calm here but when we were feeding them treats, they were all so proactive in trying to get one haha.

We played with them a little after giving the bowl of treats back to Dai, in return, he gave some toys to play with them.

I got a bit afraid then because they were so agile and quick. Also playful and cute.

My boyfriend actually played with them and unknowingly got scratched a little haha. (No biggie! He’s usually careless HAHA)My Cat Shelter Cafe Experience in Japan Second FloorThey don’t seem hostile at all, if anything, they were in need of play!

Some were afraid to come close to us especially the Russian Blue cat below.

The cat smelling me was blind in one of her eyes (it seems) and always, without fail, would smell me before letting me pet her.

Any random touch without her knowing would get her shocked, so if you see her, be gentle!

She was so cute and would constantly lick my fingers. So sad that I can’t take her back with me.

My Cat Shelter Cafe Experience in Japan Second Floor 4Some cuties like this sleeping too. She was soooooo nice to pet lol.

I really didn’t want to leave when the time was up and wanted to play with them more.

I could only hope that they would get adopted asap into loving homes.

If you have the time and money to visit this place while you’re in Osaka, do give it a chance!

This was a very lengthy post due to the pictures I took but it’s all worthwhile to let you guys know more about this place.

That’s all for today, hope you enjoyed today’s Travel Tuesday post from me!

The next one should be something about Korea Salons! I permed my hair and will be writing about it next Tuesday, so keep a lookout and follow me on Instagram or Twitter to know when my post is up.

    1. Yes it wassss. It got pretty relaxing and before we know it, we had to leave! ????

  2. Wow, what an amazing experience! Thanks for your fun review.
And cool that you live in Singapore! We went there last year for the first time and loved it. Much better than our snowy New England 😀

    1. Hehe welcome! Oh wow! Glad you liked it here. I’ve never been to England and hope to one day! ????

  3. This looks like such a lovely place to spend the afternoon. There is a cat cafe in London I went to a few years ago but there are many more cats at this cafe than there was in London. There is something too adorable about having a slice of cake among our feline friends – reveling in my crazy cat lady tendencies! x

    1. It was! They really need a home where they can feel loved again ???? haha but that cake will surely get snatched by the cats ????
