Since the Lunar New Year is just around the corner (tomorrow and Wednesday actually) and falls on a weekday, I thought that maybe I’d have the time to slot in an Info Monday post!
Like what the title says, here are my tips on taking care of your wavy permed hair!
It’s been almost 6 months since I got my hair permed by Dean at The Day’s Hair in korea. Honestly, time passes so fast!
And my permed hair is actually supposed to last 6 months.
But I’m glad to say that I still have the perm on my hair. At least most of it! I think I do have the rights to give some help on how to take care of it ????
Read on to find out my tips and whether you think you’re suited to getting a perm because all these steps might seem daunting for you.
P.S. I did my hair at The Day’s Hair (in Korea, Seoul) and I blogged about my experiences. If you haven’t checked it out, the link will be below!

Step 1: Use a hair mask after shampooing (ALWAYS)
I have a mini tub of L’Oreal hair mask that was given by Dean. He was the one who did my hair!
Since it was a hair mask, I didn’t bother getting an extra conditioner. From August till now, I’ve only used this hair mask for my hair length excluding the roots and scalp area of course.
(You could use a conditioner if you’d like, but from personal experience, a hair mask is much more moisturising for my hair, especially when it’s permed.)
Now, I only have about perhaps 3-5 uses of the hair mask before I’m totally out of it. I wasn’t expecting to use up the mask only after 6 months.
I thought I’d be out of it in 3 months because of how small this tub was! But then again, if you guys didn’t know, I washed my hair every 2-3 days.
In between, I’d use a dry shampoo (usually my loose powder from Skinfood, which I couldn’t find anymore in stores) to reduce the oil near my roots on day 2 and 3 whenever needed.
Anyway, the green bottle beside is a hair rinsing vinegar! This makes my roots soft and smooth plus refreshes my scalp. I also did a review on this and this was my repurchased bottle!
I really love it. This isn’t needed but I thought it was a great addition to my routine!

Step 2: Curling cream before, hair oil after
If you go ahead and dry your hair without applying any curling cream or essence like the one shown above, your curls will not last long and may not even appear as strongly as it should.
This was instructed by Dean btw!
After getting my hair done at The Day’s Hair, I went straight to Olive Young (after having some food, duh because it was about 4 hours long hahaha).
I asked the saleswoman if they had curling cream or anything of the sort, and she directed me to the only curling essence they had in the store.
I was kind of surprised that it was the only one in the section but I went ahead and got it.
ALSO, if you’re thinking of getting this particular hair product, please visit a Lotte Mart first. I bought this at 10,000 won and guess what. I saw Lotte Mart selling this at TWO for 10,000 won.
Sigh me is so impulsive. Anyway, this was a tip for you!
I use this product (Mise En Scene Curling Essence 2x) on towel dried hair. Meaning, they aren’t dripping wet, but sufficiently damp.
First, I separate my hair parting into two. Then, I apply an appropriate amount onto my palms and start spreading the product onto my hair (excluding my roots). The way to use this product is to scrunch your hair into a ball.
Since my hair is thick, I scrunch it a few times on each side, grabbing from the ends to the roots and hold for about 5 seconds each time. (This is all on the product’s instructions btw)
Second, once you’re done spreading the product that way, start twirling your hair outwards. Or the opposite way as instructed by your hairdresser, i.e. if your curls turn inwards instead.
Outwards = Left side of my hair turns anti-clockwise, right side of my hair turns clockwise.
Third, begin drying your hair! (I explain this part more in Step 3 below.
And lastly, when your hair is 95% dry, use a hair oil. I use the Lucido-l Argan Rich Oil on the ends of my fringe and hair. Make sure to coat every strand of hair to prevent your hair from feeling dry.
Step 3: Use a diffuser for bouncier curls BUT!
I admit that drying your hair (especially when it’s as thick as mine) can get quite frustrating. So I tried to see if a diffuser helps my hair dry more evenly and quicker.
Btw, you can just use your normal hairdryer. A diffuser is not a necessity.
After trying it, I’ll tell you at what stage you should use it.
You’ll have to dry as per normal. Dry the hair near your roots first.
Once that’s done, begin twirling outwards for each side with your hair dryer blowing at the same time.
Since my hair is thick, I split it into two again. In total, I have 4 even sections like this.
That picture was recently taken. I think about 1-2 weeks ago.
After you’ve dried your hair the normal way till it’s about I’d say, 60-70% dried, you may use your diffuser then.
The reason why you shouldn’t use it at the early stages is because your curls aren’t defined yet. Twirling and blow drying it helps it become more defined.
If you use it at the start while your hair is damp and hasn’t formed its shape, using the diffuser will make your curl looser as the action of blow drying it that way is similar to just scrunching your hair.
One thing to note is, if you want a long lasting curl that lasts for 2-3 days, even 4, you need to dry it well and tight.
Don’t worry about it looking too curly while drying your hair. After you’re sure that it’s fully dry, you can start to ruffle your hair a little so that it doesn’t stay in this position.
Oh and another tip! You can use the curling cream that you have on 2nd and 3rd day hairs! Use it on dry hair and just roughly coat the curls and twirl them again. Scrunch it while it’s in the twirled position and your curls will look alive once more 🙂
I figured this one myself lol because I didn’t want to get a separate product to use on dry hair. This works fine for me so far!
Step 4: Things to note on every first day after washing your hair
Finished drying your hair? Great. If you don’t have enough time, fret not. (Try to get it at least 70% dry though)
Leave your hair in that 4 sections that I showed you, and apply a light amount of hair oil especially to the parts that are already dried. Usually, that would be the fringe or bangs.
This prevents some frizz that is bound to happen if you air dry your hair with the wind.
When the wind blows while you’re outside, remember to bring those curls back together again.
Twirling them makes them stay in their place. After a couple of hours maybe, and having enough wind to dry your hair naturally, you may gently separate them so they look more natural and wavy instead of curly.
Also, try not to tie your hair too tightly on the first day of washing as that hinders the curls in settling to the desired curl that you want.
If you need to tie your hair, use a silk scrunchie and don’t leave it tied up for too long too!
Do not sleep with your hair damp as well, the curls will not form well.
Step 5: Use a satin or silk pillowcase to reduce frizz and keep the curls shiny
I’ve said before on my previous Info Monday post about this.

Sleeping with a satin or silk pillowcase reduces frizz and because of that, helps curls stay shiny and smooth.
I’m prone to frizziness prior to perming so I can say that this works.
After getting my hair permed, and using my satin pillowcase, I did notice that my frizz isn’t as bad as before despite getting my hair permed!
If that doesn’t say anything, I don’t know what else to say.
I bring my hair up like Medusa too as I sleep hahaha. I try to keep it up so I don’t sleep on my curls.
Satin or silk pillowcases reduces tugging on your skin as well. 🙂
Here are my numerous tips before you decide to get your hair permed.
It honestly isn’t simple to take care of it and you really need patience and time.
However, I do love my hair and how effortlessly pretty it is.
Just take sufficient care of it and you’ll probably love yours too 🙂
I might do it again when I have the time next time!
Hope you loved this post!
Oh and Happy Lunar New Year to you, wherever you are!
