Tarte Amazonian Clay Airbrush Foundation Review

The full name of this is “Tarte Amazonian Clay Full Coverage Airbrush Foundation”. Wew, what a long name.

I got on the loose powder foundation bandwagon in 2015 when I was getting a bit tired of having to wash my puffs or foundation brushes every week. My first one was the BareMinerals Matte Loose Powder Foundation SPF 15 for Oily Skin. I do not have that anymore as it has expired but I will give a short comparison.

Tarte VS BareMinerals (Loose Powder Foundation)

  1. Tarte has more coverage than BM
  2. Tarte’s shade matched better for me
  3. Tarte’s was longer lasting and wore off better throughout the day (in a humid city)
  4. A little goes a long way for Tarte compared to BM
  5. Tarte’s was significantly less messy than BM

Before I bought the Tarte Airbrush Foundation, I liked my BareMinerals. But after having tried the Tarte one, I liked it a whole lot more.

So Tarte’s one won and I don’t think I will repurchase BM’s loose powder foundation.

Btw, for reference, I use Fairly Light for BM and Fair Light Neutral for Tarte.

I have used this for almost 1.5 years, but I still have some amount left. Though it was partly due to the fact that I am loving my Fenty Pro Filt’r Foundation as well.

Both of them (Fenty and Tarte) are really natural despite the different texture, one being liquid and one being powder. I preferred to use Tarte’s especially when I’m going to school for a short 3 hours plus or just running a simple errand that doesn’t take the whole day.

Other than that, in short, they are lightweight on my skin and I don’t feel like I put a lot of base makeup. That is always a good thing. Now that I’m done with the short intro, let’s get started on the specific details.

What Tarte claims:

  • Amazonian Clay: Nature’s most perfect ingredient for better, longer, truer wear.
  • Tourmaline: A natural gemstone known to energize skin for a brighter, more radiant complexion.
  • Pearl Powder: Provides anti-inflammatory, invigorating, and anti-bacterial properties.
  • Camellia Leaf Extract: Provides antioxidant benefits to fight free radicals and aid in skin repair.
  • Mineral Pigments: Soothe and soften skin.

  • Vegan

Whether these claims are true, you can read on to know more. (Of course I’ll exclude the Vegan part)

Look & Feel

Tarte Airbrush Foundation Product

From the first touch and hold, it feels matte and the container seems pretty sturdy (even more than the BM’s container).

The mesh inside the container also helps to sift out an amount that’s just right for my Real Techniques Expert Face Brush.

One useful tip,

Tarte Airbrush Foundation Tip

I like to turn the whole container upside down and pat the bottom to get some powder to lay on the mesh, before gently overturning it again. Once I open it upright, the right amount comes up for me without me having to push my brush through the mesh.

Application

The brush that I use with this is my Real Techniques Expert Face Brush which I’ve stated above. I feel like it works really well with powders (and even with liquid foundations) so if you do not wish to purchase Tarte’s Kabuki Brush for an exorbitant price, you can try Real Techniques’.

Applying it on my face was easy and self-explanatory. In buffing motions all over my face, I refrain from using too much on my nose area as I realise it can be harder to blend if you apply too much in one area. Apart from that, everything else was great and the colour match was perfect as well.

Tarte Airbrush Foundation Coverage

Also as you can see, there are some slight shimmers on the part where I covered the red spot on my hand. However, when you apply it to your face, the shimmers do not appear. Instead, it looks like your pores are blurred out behind a veil. I suppose it’s actually the Tourmaline (natural gemstone), pearl powder and mineral pigments that gave me a “brighter, more radiant complexion”.

Furthermore, for a loose powder foundation, its coverage is really good. I’d say it lightens the reddish part of my nose easily with maybe 2-3 light layers over. It doesn’t cover the spot above completely, but I’d say that the coverage is medium to high depending on the layers you apply.

Do take note not to apply too many layers as it might look cakey, and also buff them out thoroughly so that it gives an airbrush finish, like what the product claims to do.

On the other hand, whether the Camellia Leaf Extract in this product actually do anything to “provide antioxidant benefits to fight free radicals and aid in skin repair”, it is simply hard for me to tell.

Yes

  • Covers pores really well
  • Long lasting enough for me (up to 8 hours before it wears off albeit gracefully)
  • Good coverage for mild acne
  • No breakouts from this
  • Easy usage due to mesh
  • Natural-looking
  • Lightweight on face
  • Portable and no spillage

No

  • Not very good at oil control (oil peeks through at the 3rd hour even with primer and setting powder)
  • Can get a bit cakey if you apply too much in one area
  • Creases at my eyelids
  • A bit drying if in air-conditioned room for long hours at a time

Am I Repurchasing?

Hmm, sadly not at the moment as I’m currently using my Fenty Beauty Foundation which I really like. However, if I ever want to go back to using loose powder foundations, I might reconsider getting this again. I’ll upload my Fenty Beauty review next Wednesday!

Overall Rating:

4 out of 5

That sums up my review for this product, I hope it clarified some of your doubts to help you make a better decision before purchasing.

Do you like loose powder foundations? Or do you have any recommendations for me to hop back on this bandwagon? Let me know!

With 💕,

  1. I’ve wanted to try Tarte foundation for a long time now but I’ve just never gotten around to it, here in the UK it’s not as easy to get a hold of so it has to be ordered online. I much prefer to swatch it myself first before spending the money.

    1. Oh I see. It’s a pity that it’s hard to get hold of it there. But UK has a lot of brands that I am unable to get hold of too! Haha, I guess we can’t have the best of both worlds yet.

      1. Let me know if you want me to send you anything, haha!

        1. ???? thanks for the offer, Aymie ????
